In brief: December is one of the best months to visit Pelling. Skies are mostly dry and clear, and Kanchenjunga is out on most mornings. Days are cool and sunny, while nights get cold, so pack proper warm layers. Snow in town is possible but rare. Christmas and New Year week is busy, so book early. The rest of the month is quiet.

December is one of the clearest months of the year in Pelling. The monsoon haze has gone and the air is dry, so on most mornings Kanchenjunga stands out sharp and white against a deep blue sky. It’s cold, but in the bright, sunny way that makes a balcony breakfast feel like an event.

Will it snow in Pelling in December?

Pelling sometimes gets a light dusting in winter, more often in January and February than December. You can’t plan around it. What you can count on is snow on Kanchenjunga and the surrounding peaks, which is far more impressive than snow on the road.

Why December is good for Kanchenjunga views

December is one of the driest months of the year in Pelling, and dry air means clear views. Most mornings the whole range is visible from first light until clouds start rising from the valleys around mid-morning. If seeing the mountain is the main reason for your trip, December is one of the safest months to book. See hotels with Kanchenjunga view.

Things to do in Pelling in December

  • Sunrise on Kanchenjunga. Sunrise is a little after 6 AM in December. Be outside about 20 minutes earlier for the first pink light on the peaks. See our sunrise guide.
  • Monasteries in the winter sun. Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling are calm and uncrowded.
  • Losoong festival. Losoong (Namsoong to the Lepcha community) is the Sikkimese harvest and New Year festival. In 2026 it falls around 9–13 December. Monasteries often hold masked cham dances in the days before.
  • Khecheopalri Lake and Yuksom. Both are beautiful in crisp winter light. Start after the sun is up.
  • Bonfire evenings and the spa. Long, cold evenings are the reason to stay somewhere with a fire and a good kitchen.

Christmas and New Year in Pelling

The week from about 23 December to 2 January is one of the busiest of the year, as families from Kolkata, Siliguri and beyond come up for the holidays. Trains to NJP and flights to Bagdogra fill early, and so do the best rooms in Pelling. If you’re coming for Christmas or New Year’s Eve, book your room and train or flight in October or early November.

The first three weeks of December are the opposite: clear skies, low crowds and the calmest version of Pelling.

What to pack for Pelling in December

  • A warm down or padded jacket for mornings and evenings
  • Thermal inner layers
  • A wool cap, gloves and warm socks
  • Comfortable walking shoes with grip, since monastery paths can be steep
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen, because the winter sun is strong at altitude
  • Lip balm and moisturiser for the dry air

Getting there in December

December is a good month for the drive. The roads are dry, and the landslide delays of the monsoon are behind you. Daylight is short, though, so plan to reach Pelling before about 5 PM. That means a morning arrival at NJP or Bagdogra. See Kolkata to Pelling and how to reach Pelling.
